How to Request the Transfer Key of Your Domain Name

So you want to move your domain name to another provider? No worries. Getting your transfer key is easier than you might think. This guide will walk you through the process step by step.

But first, here's something important: not all domain extensions use transfer keys. Some domains work differently. We'll explain that too.

What is a Transfer Key?

Think of a transfer key (also called an authorization code or EPP code) as a password for your domain. You need them to hand over ownership to someone else. This code proves you're the rightful owner and prevents unauthorized transfers.

Before You Start: Check Your Transfer Lock

Here's the deal. Most domains have a transfer lock enabled by default. It's like a safety switch that prevents accidental transfers. You'll need to turn this off first.

How do you check? Simple:

  1. Log into your Site.eu dashboard
  2. Click on your domain name in the left sidebar
  3. Look for the settings panel

You'll see something like this:

Just click to toggle it off. Done!

Remember: Not all domain extensions have transfer locks. If you don't see this option, your domain type doesn't use one. You can skip this step.

Getting Your Transfer Key

Now for the main event. Here's how to get your transfer key:

  1. Log into your dashboard - Head to your Site.eu control panel
  2. Find your domain - Click on the domain name in the left sidebar
  3. Look for the Manage button - In the top right corner, you'll see a white dropdown button that says "Manage"
  4. Click "Request authorization key" - This option appears in the dropdown menu

That's it! Your transfer key will be sent to the email address associated with your domain. The transfer process typically takes 5-7 days.

What If You Don't See the Transfer Key Option?

Can't find the "Request authorization key" button? Don't panic. This means your domain extension doesn't use transfer keys.

These domains use a different system. Instead of a transfer key, the domain registry will:

  • Send you an email when someone requests the transfer
  • Ask you to approve or deny the transfer
  • Give you a specific timeframe to respond (usually 5 days)

So what should you do? Simply start the transfer process with your new provider. You'll receive an approval email to the address registered as the domain holder. If you're worried about downtime during the transfer, don't be - your website stays online throughout the process.

Quick Checklist Before Transferring

Before you request that transfer key, make sure:

  • Your domain is at least 60 days old - Most new domain names can't be transferred immediately
  • The transfer lock is disabled - We covered this earlier
  • Your domain name holder's email address is up to date - In most cases you still need to confirm the transfer with this email address. Not sure about changing the domain holder?
  • Your domain isn't expired - Expired domains need to be reactivated first
