Can I use external nameservers AND Site.eu DNS?

Here's a question that comes up a lot. And honestly? The answer might surprise you.

The short answer? No, you can't do both.

Let me explain why this makes perfect sense once you understand how DNS works.

How nameservers work (in simple terms)

Think of nameservers like an address book for the internet. When you configure external nameservers for your domain, you're basically telling everyone: "Hey, if you want to look up information about my domain, check this specific address book."

Here's what happens when someone visits your website:

  1. They type your domain name
  2. Their computer asks: "Which nameservers should I check?"
  3. It goes to those nameservers you configured
  4. Those nameservers provide all the DNS records (like where your website is hosted)

Pretty straightforward, right?

Why you can't use both at the same time

When you point your domain to external nameservers, you're saying those nameservers are in charge. Not Site.eu. Not anyone else. Just those specific nameservers.

It's like having two different address books with different information about the same person. Which one should people trust? That's why the internet doesn't allow it.

So where do I configure my DNS records?

Simple. You configure them wherever your nameservers are pointing.

  • Using external nameservers? Configure your DNS records there. They probably have an interface where you can add, edit, or remove DNS records for your domain. If you're managing DNS elsewhere, you might see notifications in your dashboard.
  • Want to use Site.eu's interface? Then activate DNS management for your domain in your Site.eu dashboard. Learn how to manage your domain's DNS records once activated.

What if my external nameserver provider doesn't have a DNS interface?

Feel free to activate DNS management for your domain in your Site.eu dashboard. You'll be able to configure all the DNS records you need right there. And between you and me? It's one of the best DNS management interfaces out there anyway!

The interface is clean, easy to use, and you don't need to be a tech expert to figure it out. And it also has neat features like DNS history, so you can always see what you've done. Plus, it's free and included with your domain registration.

The bottom line

You get to choose:

  • Use external nameservers and configure DNS records there
  • Or use Site.eu's nameservers and configure DNS records in your Site.eu dashboard

But not both at the same time. The internet just doesn't work that way.
