Managing your domain's DNS records might sound technical, but it's actually pretty straightforward. Think of DNS records like your domain's address book – they tell the internet where to find your website and email.
Here's how you can take control of your DNS records through your Site.eu dashboard.
Getting to Your DNS Settings
First things first, you'll need to log into your dashboard on our website. Once you're in:
- Click on your domain name in the left sidebar
- Navigate to Domain settings
- Click on Advanced settings
That's where you'll find the option to manage your domain's DNS records. Easy, right?
Important Things to Know Before You Start
If you're using "Use default Site.eu settings":
Right now, we're managing your DNS records automatically. It's like having autopilot on. Learn why default settings work best for most users. But if you want to take manual control, you'll need to disable this setting first. Just remember – once you do this, you'll be responsible for managing all your DNS records.
If you're using other nameservers:
Is your domain currently configured to use nameservers other than ours? Then you can't manage your DNS records through your Site.eu dashboard just yet. You'll need to enable DNS management first, which means switching your domain to point to our nameservers. Keep in mind that your custom nameservers will be replaced with ours. If your domain is registered somewhere else:
No problem! You can still manage your DNS records through our dashboard. Here's what you need to do:
- Add your domain name as an external domain name first (if not done already)
- Go to Domain settings → Advanced settings like explained above
- You'll see a yellow button asking you to point your domain to our nameservers (if not done already)
- Click that yellow button to let us know you'll be using our nameservers
- Then update your domain's nameservers at your registrar
- After this you can manage your domain name's DNS via your Site.eu dashboard, even though it's not registered with us
Important: Don't skip clicking that yellow button! If you change your nameservers without telling us first by clicking that yellow button, your DNS won't work properly. We only add your domain to our DNS system after you click that button.
Made a Mistake? No Worries!
We've all been there. You change something and suddenly your website stops working. The good news? You can easily roll back any DNS changes you've made.
Just look for the rollback option in your DNS management area. It shows you a list of previous DNS record versions with timestamps. Pick the one from before things went wrong, and you're back in business.
Quick Tips for Success
- Always double-check your DNS records before saving
- If you're not sure about something, the rollback feature is your friend
- Pay attention to any notifications about missing records
Managing your DNS records gives you full control over how your domain works. It might seem a bit technical at first, but once you get the hang of it, you'll appreciate the flexibility it offers. Want extra security? Learn about DNSSEC.
